United States v. C.H. - MAIL/WIRE FRAUD

July 2016

In this federal case, client was accused of fifteen counts of mail and wire fraud as a result of running a summer food program and receiving reimbursements for inflated meal count totals to the tune of over half a million dollars. The government sought a money judgment in that amount, seizure of bank accounts, forfeiture of two vehicles, and forfeiture of two homes. After months of working meticulously through mountains of evidence, performing defense investigation, and working closely with the client, Harris & Carmichael lawyers were able to show the government that their figures were erroneous. Client pled guilty to two counts, and faced up to 30 years in prison. However, at sentencing, Ms. Harris successfully argued for a variance from the sentencing guidelines, and secured a 15-month sentence for her client. A restitution order of only $249,000 was entered, and client's vehicles and properties were not forfeited.
